Square Footage: 48,370 SF

Aims Community College’s dated recreation center started at 22,765 square feet. We demolished the entire south wing of the building and portions of the existing north wing. The existing gymnasium floor was completely removed as well. We then constructed a new two-story south wing, rebuilt the north wing into a two-story structure, as well as added on to the east and west face of the existing gymnasium. The existing gymnasium received a new recessed slab to accommodate the new wood flooring.
The newly-expanded building is now 48,370 square feet and features an elevated indoor track, aerobic/martial arts room, two racquetball courts, cardio room, spinning room, free weight room, classrooms, and offices.
The exterior features brick veneer, like the recently-renovated Cornerstone Building, storefront windows with views of the mountains to the west, and stucco finishes. The front of the building features a two-story curtain wall that highlights the elevated running track and revitalized entrance. The second-floor cardio room overlooks the free weight area and the running track is open to the first-floor lounge/vestibule. The existing gymnasium was opened on the second floor to allow runners to see down into the gymnasium.
The sitework portion of the project included reworking the existing utility lines to accommodate the new building footprint and future expansion. We also demolished and reconfigured the parking lot, installed site concrete walls, revamped the landscaping and irrigation, and installed new colored concrete sidewalks to connect the rec center to the campus promenade.
